Event: Indiana Humanities Bar Crawl [Indianapolis]

Indiana Humanities puts on a historically-themed bar crawl every summer, and this year they chose “Duck & Cover” and every bar had actors portraying a different scene from the Cold War.

First up for this group, Union 50.

This actor from the historical society discussed his newly acquired (and top secret) government job before being reprimanded by an officer who told him the importance of his confidentiality.

Indy Reads Books hosted women discussing their future careers in light of the Cold War.

St. Mary Catholic Church was a location with actual historical significance. Communist sympathizers were not allowed to meet in the 60s in Indianapolis, and St. Mary open its doors for any group to be given the opportunity to gather.

On top of the Hirons building, a “spotter” kept look out for Soviet planes. He invited the audience to participate in spotter training, while keeping his eye out for Soviet spies in his midst.

Event: Indy Redefined [Indianapolis]

I have had the best experience being Indy Hub‘s “official” photographer. Not only do I work with and get to meet some great people who live and work in this city, but I have the opportunity to attend unique events I never would have known about if I weren’t involved with this group. Everyone who is a part of these events has such pride in Indianapolis and is constantly striving to make it a better city for its residents. Every event I attend throughout the year for Indy Hub makes me more and more proud to live in this city.

The Indy Redefined event consisted of 3 sub-events: The Hackathon, Indy Redefined and the 5X5 competition.

Up first was The Hackathon. This event began the day before the others where anyone could enter to create an app that could be used in the city in 24 hours. This began at The Hinge work space and they would announce the winner the following day at Indy Redefined.

Now for the main event: Indy Redefined. Different speakers came to present a wide variety of talks. The moderators for the event were Derrick Feldmann and Molly Chavers.

And now for the final (and my favorite!) event: the 5×5 competition. I have photographed this before (see here) and it allows 5 people (after tons of submission sorting) to present their ideas for the city in 5 minutes and 5 slides. Whoever’s idea is the best (based on the audience’s votes) is granted $10,000 to put toward their idea to help improve the city of Indianapolis.

The idea below ended up winning the $10,000. It was called the Rosebud project and basically will go toward planting these beautiful trees in certain areas of the city for aesthetic appeal, and also to hopefully group people in the areas where the trees are planted for festivals, etc.!
