Meanwhile, while the bride was getting ready, the bridal party was up to something very different downstairs. “Gatecrashing” is a wedding tradition in Singapore culture. The bridesmaids haze the groom and groomsmen, in a way, and only after passing all the tasks to the bridesmaids’ standards, they will then allow him to go see and marry his bride.

I had no idea what this hazing would entail when Denise told me about gatecrashing. But when I got there, the first thing I witnessed was the groomsmen digging prunes out of a bowl of flour using only their mouths.

The girls then told the boys they had to eat this plate full of marshmallows in ten seconds. Only after they shoved the marshmallows in their mouths did they discover that the bridesmaids filled the inside with hot sauce.

All the guys had to then answer a series of questions about Denise and could not move on to the next until they completed all the questions correctly.

He passed all the bridemaids’ tests and got to go upstairs and get his bride!
